On Our Way To States

Congratulations to the LHS cheer team for placing fifth on their performance in Districts last weekend. The team had to place out of thirteen teams in order to be accepted to perform at States.
On Friday, January 20th the girls will be on their way to an extraordinary experience, but as the days count down, they are working harder and faster to achieve their goals as a team.
With practices during the week to practices on Saturday’s, the girls are ready and pumped.
On their way to districts, the team was second guessing their talent on whether or not they would even place, but as the judges rallied up their scores, they sought out to see that they were more ready than they thought.
On their way back home, the girls came up with a list of more goals they would like to achieve for this year’s states.
I interviewed a couple of girls from the team that had a lot to say about their goals.
Junior, Carly Sanders is excited and ready. “Knowing that we placed 5th in Districts and are getting ready for States gives me all the reason to be more spirited,” Sanders said.
This is Sanders first year in competitive cheerleading.
Junior, Alexa Emerich is nervous but ready for all the right reasons. “When we competed at Districts, I was extremely anxious for our routine. This year’s routine is probably the hardest routine we’ve had yet.”
The girls are doing a great job staying positive with two weeks counting down until States.
Let’s wish the girls luck as they head through their path of dreams. Good luck girls!
As the day approached, the girls were on the bus heading towards the Hershey Giant Center. They were both excited and nervous towards their routine, but they knew in their hearts whatever happened they were winners regardless.
Time was up and before they knew it, it was their time to perform on the mat. At the end of the day, the girls had received the heartbreaking but realizing news.
Unfortunately, the girls did not qualify for both semi finals or finals, but Coach Roth, Coach Tiana, and Coach Heather were completely thrilled of all the girls hard work and dedication to the team and they could not have asked for a better season.

Better luck next time girls!
Hands on your hips, smiles on your lips, spirit in your hearts, Let’s start!

Cedar Crest and our own Lebanon Cedars went head to head on Thursday, January 14th and Friday, January 15th. Thursday was the girls’ game and Friday was the boys’ game.

Thursday’s Varsity score was a close 28-19 with Cedar Crest coming out victorious.

I had the opportunity to interview sophomore, Azelyn Arenas, who plays both Junior Varsity and Varsity.

CT: Knowing that your team lost, is there anything you wish you could have done better as a team?

AA: Just the little things, like better passes and less turnovers.

CT: Did you take anything from this game that you can perfect at your next few games or next year?

AA: Keeping my head up even when I make a mistake.

I also got a chance to ask similar questions to sophomore, Varsity player, Felix Kortright. His team’s score was a hard fought 44-32 with a Crest win.

CT: What was one thing that you wish the team could have done better or did you take anything from this game that you can perfect in the future?

FK: One thing I wish that we could have done better is talk more as a team. I think if we would have done that better we could have came out with the win, but I know that is going to be better next year.

CT: Why was Shaquell Ortiz wearing Camryn Shaak’s number?

FK: We were wearing his number because he is still part of our family. Even though he can’t play, we still want to make him feel that he is always going to be part of our family so he can see that we are playing for him.

If anyone went to our boys’ or girls’ games, they would see that both teams really did try their hardest.

We don’t win every game, but we keep our mind set like winners.

The next girls’ home game is tonight, the 21st at 6. While the boys’ game will be Monday, the 25th at the same time.

Be sure to come out and support your Cedars!

Spring weather is here, and summer temperatures are quickly approaching. School is getting tiresome and you are starting to not care about coming in late.

Yes gentlemen, it is prom season. For most of us, we are seniors lucky enough to ask beautiful girls to be our dates.

Many believe prom preparation for men is quick and simple and that we do not do much to get ready for the big night.

There are several men, including me, who go through a ritual for nights such as prom, that include dancing, jumping around, and taking pictures all day.

Step one: wake up and immediately slip on your running shoes and go for a 3-mile run. Next: come home, brush your teeth and make the best breakfast you possibly can.

If you are well prepared and responsible, you should have already scheduled for your haircut for prom day early in the day. After your haircut, you hit the gym for a vigorous hour workout that will have you feeling pumped and refreshed for prom.

Once you come home, you set out all your clothing, take a steaming shower, dry off and apply lotion all over yourself. Who wants dry skin for a night like prom?

After you clean up and put on your tailor-made tuxedo, you meet up with your prom date and take sweet pictures. For the last step, you simply have the time of your life, and you better enjoy it because after this, you are forced to deal with the real world.

Every year after a long 17 week season, fans are disappointed when their teams do not reach the postseason.

When a team holds the worst or second-worst record during the regular season, they are rewarded with a high lottery draft pick. Weird how it works, right?

Having the worst record does not look good on any teams resume, but luckily for Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans and Tennessee Titan fans, they are pleased.

On April 30th, the Tampa Bay Buccaneer held the number one draft pick and chose Jameis Winston, 2013 Heisman winner and quarterback from Florida State University.

With the second pick, the Tennessee Titans acquired Marcus Mariota, 2014 Heisman winner and quarterback from University of Oregon.

This is the first time in NFL history where the number one and two picks were Heisman winners. Both are considered excellent prospects so there is no surprise they were chased after.

Since the elite quarterbacks are playing out to their final years, franchises are looking for the next star to lead their team to the elusive Lombardi Trophy.

Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots, and Peyton Manning, quarterback of the Denver Broncos, are both in their late 30’s and are soon due for retirement.

We can only be patient for the 2015-2016 NFL season to see if Winston and Mariota are the new faces of football.

Stephen Curry, point guard of the Golden State Warriors, has won his first ever Most Valuable Player Award.

Curry played college basketball at Davidson College in North Carolina. Due to the popularity of the fellow North Carolina Tar Heels, not much attention was given to Curry and his Davidson Wildcats during his early years.

The apple apparently doesn’t fall far from the tree. Curry is the son of former NBA player Dell Curry, whose sharpshooting and accurate 3-point shooting seemed to have transferred to his son.

Curry is recognized as one of the best shooters in the league. Teams always have to play him with a different defensive game plan due to the many skills he possesses.

This season, he became the fastest player to ever make 1,000 three- pointers, accomplishing it in only 369 games.

Curry also set the record for most three pointers made in a season with an incredible 286. The previous record was 272, also set by him two years earlier.

Curry led his team to a 67-15 win-loss record in the regular season. This is tied for the fifth best regular season record in NBA history.

With the many accomplishments he has and the fact that he led his team to the best record in the NBA, it seems like Stephen Curry was a shoo-in to take home the MVP.

The Philadelphia Eagles are making some big moves so far this offseason.

They finished with a 10-6 record in the 2014 season and missed the playoffs. The team’s looked like a legitimate playoff threat at the beginning of the season, but were hit with an injury bug.

Quarterback, Nick Foles going down with a broken collarbone had a big impact on the team’s success.

Apparently, the Eagles did not want an injury prone quarterback so they traded him, along with some draft picks to the St. Louis Rams for quarterback, Sam Bradford, and a fifth round pick.

Another huge trade the Eagles made sent running back LeSean McCoy, arguably the best player the Eagles had, to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker, Kiko Alonso.

Alonso should help round out Philadelphia’s defense that struggled last year.

Although Philly sent away their star running back, they made a key move in signing NFL rushing leader of 2014, Demarco Murray. Murray also won the AP Offensive Player of the Year award last season.

Murray was a member of Eagles’ rival, the Dallas Cowboys, last season. Hopefully the fans can put that behind them and realize that they have been given a very talented player.

Philly has also picked up free agent Tim Tebow. The former New York Jet has not played in an NFL game since 2012.

Tebow may seem like a solid signing, but he may just be a role player until Bradford has recovered from his torn ACL.

The Eagles’ offensive and defensive lines have both improved over the offseason. These changes could either help Philly soar to success, or crash to the ground.

Hello Spring!

It has been a long time, but the weather is actually starting to warm up. It’s finally spring.

One of the best parts of this season is participating in many outdoor activities like going to a park, planting flowers, and swimming.

Visiting local parks like South Hills and Coleman’s can be a great way to get outside. Playing basketball or even football are activities you can do at the park.

Even if you aren’t the sporty type, going to the park just to hang out with friends is another cool part of the warm weather.

Another great perk about hot weather is the ability for flowers to actually grow. Getting outside and planting flowers or vegetables can be anyone’s new hobby.

Seeing the results of planting will make anyone feel accomplished.

There are other activities that spring has to offer that winter does not, such as swimming. It is a great way to exercise and a superb way to get out and be with friends.

A popular pool in Lebanon is the one located in Coleman’s Park. Also there are pools in Annville-Cleona as well.

So put away those sleds and hot chocolate, and grab your bathing suits, because it’s time to say goodbye to winter and hello to spring!

Monday, April 6th, 2015 the NCAA tournament aired its annual championship basketball game.

The Wisconsin Badgers and the Duke Blue Devils faced off after going through the March Madness brackets and coming out on top.

Both teams had to beat four other teams in the March Madness tournament before reaching the final.

Wisconsin was favored to win the championship due to their previous win over the undefeated Kentucky Wild Cats.

The first half had 11 lead changes and Duke was leading with seven fouls while Wisconsin only received two. The first half ended with a tied score of 36-36.

Wisconsin got a nine-point lead early in the second half. However, Duke answered back, with freshman, Grayson Allen, stepping up and taking control of the court.

Another Duke freshman, Tyus Jones, also led the team by sealing the deal with his free throws.

Duke senior captain, Quinn Cook, led defensively on the court throughout the game. He also scored the most three pointers and broke the record for most three pointers in a season.

Duke’s eight players managed to pull through the foul trouble and attained the 2015 Championship title. Jones was named the 2015 Most Outstanding Player of the game.

This was the team’s fifth championship title and they certainly deserved it. The three star seniors will be entering the NBA draft; while Duke may be losing three key players they are sure to gain five fresh faces to put on the court.

Senior Slave Day

Monday, April 6th, was Senior Slave Day. All the seniors who were bought at the Senior Auction were to do and wear whatever their owner said.

Freshman, Carly Sanders, bought her brother, Noah for $100. Carly had Sanders in their father’s old basketball jersey and a black Afro wig.

Another senior who was bought was Jahlil Ortiz. His owner, math teacher, Ms. Brown, had him dressed in a small dress with a long brown wig on. To top off Ortiz’s look, Brown added makeup.

Sophomore, Madison Hartman, bought Brittany Ulrich and dressed her in a cheerleading uniform. The joke behind it was Ulrich is a basketball player; so seeing her in a cheerleading uniform was a good laugh.

Grayson Long, a junior, dressed Ethan Arnold-Paine in a Greek god themed outfit with a wig and robe.

The Senior Auction is a privilege, and will only continue if the behavior at Lebanon High remains exceptional.

Hopefully the Senior Auction will remain as a tradition at Lebanon High School. It is a very interesting time of the year.
